Antonball Deluxe
Antonball Deluxe is a puzzle-platforming video game developed and published by Summitsphere (Originally published by Proponent Games). It is the third game in the Anton series, as well as the first commercial game released by Summitsphere. The game contains remade and expanded versions of the original Antonball and Punch Ball Antonball, as well as a new multiplayer mode, Vs. Antonball.
Gameplay
Antonball
Antonball combines elements of brick-breaking with platforming gameplay. The player must clear levels (phases) by clearing all bricks in a level using the ball. The player loses a life if the ball leaves the play area, or if the player comes into contact with certain enemies or hazards. Unlike Antonball Classic, the player does not have the ability to run or fast-fall, but can aim the ball upwards or downwards. The player can also perform the clutch to launch the ball forwards or quickly dash, and backflip to jump higher. After a certain amount of bricks are hit without the player touching the ball (As indicated with the number below the player's lives), point bonuses are awarded to the player going from 1600, 2400, 3200, and finally 6400. Points can also be earned by tokens that are either littered throughout the stage or randomly dropped. To help you bust some bricks, some bricks contain power-ups, the power-ups include a Gun, Multiball, and Time Stop. After every world is completed a bonus stage occurs, in the bonus stage the ball can go through bricks rather than bounce off of them, completing the bonus stage in a run gives you an extra continue. Once you complete the final main stage of Boiler City, instead of a bonus stage, a boss appears and it has to be defeated by clutching back its bombs. After the boss is defeated Antonball mode is completed with a total of 30 main levels, even if you fail however, your score is transferred to points to be used in the lottery. Alongside the main campaign is a set of DLC stages which are considered very difficult and reuses the retro graphics and music from Vs Antonball.
Punch Ball Antonball
Punch Ball Antonball requires the player to defeat rounds of enemies using the Punch Ball. Several enemy types spawn each round which all need to be hit by the Punchball and after knocking them over, kicking them will defeat the enemy and award a point bonus for how many enemies are kicked at one, going from 800, 1600, 2400, 3200, and finally 6400. Just like in the Antonball mode, Tokens both appear in certain places and drop down after a while. However, power-ups don't exist, so you don't get any help, defeating enemies. Also like in Antonball mode, bonus stages occur after each world is completed but this time the stages require you to use the Punchball to hit certain timed switches to reach an exit, beating the bonus stage will give you a continue. Unlike Antonball mode though, there is no boss to beat to win, instead another bonus stage occurs, and after that, you just win with a total of 30 levels. Just like in Antonball, your score is transferred to points to be used in the lottery. DLC levels also exist in the same format as Antonball mode, providing extra hard stages using the retro theme.
Vs. Antonball
In Vs. Antonball, multiple players compete to knock down all the bricks on the opposing players wall, while defending their own from the opponent. Each stage has gimmicks that can help or hinder player progress. Another thing that can change up the game is power-ups, there are 4 in total including the returning gun and the exclusive power-ups, the trash can, the incredible spinner, and the beach ball. After all the bricks on one side are gone, the match is over, and the scoreboard after the game updates to reflect the player's standings. There are 9 Stages in total for Vs. Antonball, with 3 of the stages are original themes not present in the single-player modes. At the start only 1 stage is playable but as you beat bonus stages in the Antonball mode, more stages are unlocked.
Enemies
The enemy roster of Antonball Deluxe is the biggest the series has seen yet with many new enemies being introduced in this installment. While in Antonball mode only the Ballbusters appear, Punchball mode has a lot more enemies, all with unique patterns to them.

In the game, there are several unlockable vinyls which are unlocked via the lottery.
While there was no Soundcloud release of the soundtrack like what Antonball Classic had previously, several songs were posted onto Soundcloud independently of the full release. The song Going Home was also posted on the SummitSphere YouTube on January 22nd, 2021.
Antonball Deluxe's music would get a Soundtrack release known as Antonball Deluxe - The Ballbustin' Soundtrack which was released on Steam and Bandcamp on May 28th, 2021, it costs $6.99 USD on Steam and $7 USD on Bandcamp. Antonball Deluxe started as an idea by Tony Grayson shortly after the release of Antonball Classic, it was visioned as a more streamlined experience than Antonball Classic and the first idea that would be present in the game would be that the direction of the ball would be based on what direction you’re holding at the time of impact. Someone named thievinimp liked the idea as well and thus the creation of Antonbal Deluxe would begin.[1]
Around a month later, Tony Grayson was finding the "soundset" of Antonball Deluxe, going for a restored GBA-esc soundscape for the game along with posting an early version of the bonus stage theme.[2] A month after that, the first iteration of Anton's spite for the game was revealed along with Tony saying that those sprites were a "semi-formal confirmation of Antonball Deluxe".[3][4] After that Antonball Deluxe would go quiet for the rest of 2019 as no news was shared for the rest of that year.
During this quiet period, a prototype was made in December 2019, known as Anton's Balls or Antonball 2 according to the application title. 4 prototypes were made in a day but they contained the same codebase and style. Unlike the eventual Antonball Deluxe that would be released, the game would retain the Original Game Boy style like Antonball Classic and would be nothing more than an expansion of the original Antonball.[5]
January 2020 was big for Antonball Deluxe a Discord Exclusive test room was posted[6], featuring a lot of early assets and played very differently from both the original Antonball and the final game. The codebase was completely rewritten and the only code left from the original Antonball was the ball collision.[7] At the same time the Summitsphere Twitter was ramping up the amount of Antonball Deluxe tweets making many new jokes and slowly building up the game. The main differences in these earlier builds include the bigger bezel[8] and a timer that ticks down[9]. The second playable character, Annie would also make her grand introduction around this time as well.[10]
On March 18th, 2020, Punch Ball Antonball would be released, it is a direct sequel to Antonball Classic and would be the first time we would see the Punchball gameplay style. Although the game’s outward appearance is identical to Antonball Classic, Punch Ball Antonball's codebase is based on an early version of the Antonball Deluxe codebase and unfinished versions of several assets used in Deluxe can be found as unused files.
Soon after, 2 new modes were announced for Antonball Deluxe, the first was Vs. Antonball with a new song titled Sewer Slam being revealed on April 26, 2020. After that in May 2020, 3 tweets were made that hinted toward a 3rd game mode that focused more on puzzles and adventuring.[11][12][13] After those 3 tweets the mode would be silently cut from the final release of Antonball Deluxe and not be mentioned again until June 2021 where 2 tweets talking about the mode were released showcasing unseen raw gameplay and the title of the illusive cut game mode called AntonLand.[14][15]
In August 2020, Summitsphere made a deal with the upcoming video game publisher Proponent Games to publish Antonball Deluxe.[16] This not only cemented the Steam release for the game but Proponent Games also provided Summitsphere with Nintendo Switch Dev Kits making it so that a Switch version of Antonball Deluxe would now be possible.[17] They would also market the game and distribute demos strangely and uniquely, making them controversial to the Anton community.
In September 2020, Antonball Deluxe would have its first publicly released demo during the SAGE 2020 event.[18] In the SAGE 2020 Demo, Anton and Annie dawn Purple clothes and explore a tiny hub filled with Arcade machines leading to the 3 modes Antonball, Punchball, and VS. Antonball. While not used in the final game, Snick from Pizza Tower's SAGE Demo appeared in the SAGE Demo of Antonball Deluxe, where he could be unlocked by completing Snick's Challenge. A few days later an update to this demo would be made adding many quality-of-life improvements, this updated SAGE 2020 would also serve as the basis for the Steam Fall Festival demo in October 2020 before Antonball Deluxe Lite replaced it.[19] While being based on the SAGE 2020 demo, the Steam Fall Festival demo removes all of the SAGE elements of the previous demo, including the Purple clothing and everything revolving around Snick. The interactive hub also had a makeover, going for a purple pub aesthetic and Anton's Dog replaces Snick as the interactable NPC.
Like the previous year, January 2021 ramped up the news on Antonball Deluxe with the reveal of Online play in Antonball Deluxe, a Patreon netplay build was announced for people to try[20] along with a Twitch stream and VOD on YouTube to let those who aren't subscribed see what they were missing out.[21] More reveals would come in the following 2 months like stage previews and guest character reveals. It all came together on March 5, 2021, when Antonball Deluxe was launched on Steam for $15.99 at launch, and after the launch period would be $19.99.
After the Steam launch, 2 updates were made to the game, titled Update #1 The Quickest Update in the West and Update #2 "The Quick Fix", Update #1 was released on March 8, 2021, and focused on game balancing while Update #2 released on March 25, 2021, focusing on fixing bugs. Another update released a few months later known as Update #3 "Balance to the Balls" released on June 7, 2021, which balanced the game more and fixed more bugs.
In May 2021, The Summitsphere Twitter posted an image of a Switch Dev Kit with Antonball Deluxe running on it. This tweet confirmed that Antonball Deluxe on Switch was in development.[22] By August, the Switch port was completed and submitted to Nintendo for approval.[23]
In June 2021, a new demo was released as a separate Steam application known as Antonball Deluxe Lite, it was like the final game but had lots of the game gated behind the full release, just like how Lite versions of games work on the App Store before the advent of Free-to-Play games.[24]
On June 30, 2021, 2 new pieces of DLC were announced for the PC version of Antonball Deluxe, the first was the Better Than Nothing DLC, which included the character Nothing and the Classic Ball Training stages for both Antonball and Punchball all for a price of $4.99.[25] The other DLC that was announced was Fixed Gold Evil Baby Paul (Shiny) which is a new version of the character Paul that priced itself at $0.99 usually but during the launch period, the DLC was 40% off with the price of $0.59.[26] Both DLCs would launch on July 13, 2021, alongside a new update for Antonball Deluxe known as Update #4, which addressed the potential issue with save files and unlocks.
On July 9, 2021, the permanent non-sale price of Antonball Deluxe went down from $19.99 to $14.99, allowing for more people to play Antonball Deluxe.[27]
After a major hype campaign by Summitsphere starting in August, the Nintendo Switch version of Antonball Deluxe would launch on September 28, 2021.[28] It featured all the Patches up to Update #4 and included all of the DLC for free in the package. As a consequence, however, there is no online for the Nintendo Switch version of the game. This wasn't a conscious choice made by Summitsphere, it was done because Proponent Games didn't allow for online on Nintendo Switch, so Summitsphere made all DLC free as a compromise.[29]
On January 4, 2022, a beta branch of Antonball Deluxe was released that added a double jump ability as well as an arrow indicator for aiming the ball, along with various physics adjustments. The update would later go live in the Normal Steam release on January 18, 2022.
On February 7, 2022, A quick patch for Antonball Deluxe on Steam would be released that fixed the online component of the game.
In November 2022, major news was released about Antonball Deluxe, that being that the publishing rights were handed over to Summitsphere[30] after Proponent Games lost the rights after not make good on their obligations as a publisher which forced Proponent Games to hand over publishing to Summitsphere early.[31] Immediately as soon as the announcement was made the Steam transfer rights were finished making Antonball Deluxe a Summitsphere published title. Alongside the main Antonball Deluxe game, Antonball Deluxe Lite was also included with the transfer but soon after the transfer was made Sumitsphere delisted Antonball Deluxe Lite from Steam due to "quality standards".[32] The Switch version of Antonball Deluxe was also made a Summitsphere title but the transfer wasn't completed until December 2022 because of Nintendo's policy of having rights transferred over.[33][34]
Shortly after the transfer, Another Steam update was released known as The First BALLance Update! on November 27, 2022. The balance update changed up the player's physics to make them a lot nicer to play with. It is currently unknown if the update will make its way to the Nintendo Switch version of the game.
On February 3, 2024, Tony Grayson's Twitter hinted at an Antonball Deluxe remaster, the main thing Tony would want to change is the art and music, making it more in line with Antonblast.[35]

Nintendo Life[43] | 6/10 |
Antonball Deluxe didn't get much coverage by any publications during its initial Steam launch, only being covered by gamecritics.com which gave a score of 8/10, stating how "Antonball is a great little package of classic-looking, feeling and sounding videogame goodness. Combining two simple concepts in unique ways to create new flavors of engaging gameplay is always great to see from studios showing an appreciation for the medium and a mind for ingenuity. Given this, Antonball is a safe pick-up for anyone with an itch for something old-school, yet still fresh.". Despite this review however, the Metacritic score of the PC version of Antonball Deluxe to this day has a score of "TBD" indicating the game didn't receive enough coverage to warrant a score.[44].
When Antonball Deluxe came to the Switch several more publications went to review the game, the most positive scores came from GameSpace and Digital Chumps, with GameSpace concluding "Antonball Deluxe is a fun, addicting, and at times a frustrating game, especially when the difficulty ramps up. Adults should enjoy the retro feeling of its arcade style with throwback graphics and great retro sound effects. As Antonball Deluxe helps you relive your Nintendo 8-bit days the question is are your reflexes still top-notch to take on this delightful platformer?" and Game Chumps ending it's review off with "Antonball Deluxe does not hide its inspirations. It combines the block-breaking hook of Arkanoid and the simple platforming of the original Mario Bros.. While it may not feel revolutionary, it’s a notable diversion from the genre incorporating a unique twist in an immensely enjoyable package, especially if you have friends.". The lowest scores came from Hey Poor Player and Nintendo Life, with Hey Poor Player stating "Antonball Deluxe is a wonderfully retro and niche title that will appeal to old school gamers. There are elements that leave a lot to be desired: difficulty options, and more incentive to unlock characters wouldn’t go amiss. That said there are three diverse game modes on offer and at the very least Antonball’s simplicity allows it to be enjoyed as some light entertainment if you’re traveling or have an hour to kill." and Nintendo Life concluding it's review with "Antonball Deluxe is, overall, a tricky game to review. As a solo game it's an easy pass, but on multiplayer we can see it clicking with the right group. It didn't set our world alight, but its simple charms may just work for you and your mates.". All of these reviews from these publications resulted in Antonball Deluxe Switch getting a Metacritic score of "70".[45]
